What happens after you flush?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

(4 minutes)

What happens to the water you flush down the toilet? Here’s a great video on how waste water is treated, cleaned, and put back into the environment, from Discovery News.

Parents Note: As you might expect, because of the subject matter of this video, poop is mentioned, but not inappropriately. Let the giggles commence.

Space travel may soon become as common for everyday people as traveling by airplane. How? Because history tells us so. (Well, it’s an interesting argument!) Find out why in this clip from Ignite! Learning.

More Japanese “Rube Goldberg” Machines

Monday, July 30th, 2007

(9 minutes)

Here’s another great compilation of some fun and incredible “Rube Goldberg” style contraptions — inventions that are the model of inefficiency, and go through all sorts of crazy steps to do basically little, if anything. These were popularized by the great cartoonist Rube Goldberg in the 1920s and 1930s. The ones on this video are used as a program ID on a Japanese TV station. I think we featured a couple of these here in an earlier post, but here’s a whole ten minutes of these crazy things.

I guess it is someone’s full time job to come up with these. Amazing.

“Rube Goldberg” in the Woods

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Here’s another great model of the “Rube Goldberg” tribute to inefficiency… this time an outdoors version of a contraption designed to ring a bell.

If I was a kid, I’d be off into the woods after seeing this, building my own weird contraption.

“Rube Goldberg” Office Contraption

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Here’s one more nutty “Rube Goldberg” machine using office supplies and equipment. I guess business was a little slow that day and the employees had to have SOMETHING to do.

Flashlight Animation commercial

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Here’s a Sprint commercial, but sorry Sprint, I’m not paying attention to you… instead, I’m looking at the nifty “flashlight animation” that these artists created for this little gem. This was done using long exposure stop motion animation of people actually waving colored flashlights in these patterns… just like you might do with a sparkler. You can see the people moving the flashlights as a kind of blur next to their designs. Is that neat or what?
